First and for most, they do not work. If they did, nobody would be fat anymore. We would just stick to grapefruits or cabbage this week and it would solve the problem for entire life. Huh? Not likely.
They do not work, because they are not designed to work. They do what it says on a tin: lose 6 pounds this week. They do not promise you will keep the weight off. You are going to lose 6 pounds of water weight, and maybe a little bit of muscle. You are going to look unhealthy, tired and not in very good mood.
What they do not say, is what else you will lose expect of weight. Hair, for instance. Hair loss is a common companion of crash dieting. Not enough nutrients in a food means that body ‘shut down’. Broken nails and grey skin will follow.
What else?
Our skin is amazing, but still doesn’t like rapid weight loss. You are going to get stretch marks so big, people will ask when you have had your baby. Even if you are 13.
Your metabolism will slow down and go into ‘starvation mode’, trying to preserve what it can. It means that whatever you will eat, it will go straight to build more fat cells.
Welcome yo-yo effect.
Enough scare, what will work?
Little changes, over longer period of time – that’s the whole secret. Less stress, more real food, more exercise and you can live 10 or 20 years longer.

Does good mood diet truly exist? Apart from eating chocolate, I mean. It is scientifically proven that chocolate lifts your mood – by boosting serotonin levels. And uhm, sex, yup, it does it as well. Who would have thought that?
I have found today quite nice article about other food examples, so read on to find out what should we eat to prevent us feeling depressed.

Louise Hall
May 4, 2008

Feeling blue? Mung beans, lobster, turkey, asparagus, sunflower seeds, cottage cheese, pineapple, tofu, spinach and bananas could lift your spirits.

A diet high in tryptophan – an amino acid converted by the body into the feel-good chemical serotonin – can improve mood and wellbeing, pediatrician and natural health expert Caroline Longmore said.

The body cannot produce tryptophan so unless we get enough through our diets, we may suffer a deficiency, leading to low serotonin levels which are associated with mood disorders, anxiety, cravings and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

“Following a diet which contains foods rich in naturally occurring serotonin will improve your mood, leaving you energised and in a state of harmony and wellbeing,” Dr Longmore said.

Sounds easy, is it? Just eat a bit of lobster and it wouldn’t matter if your hubby is cheating on you. I wonder, is that’s why Victoria chose lobster for her Christmas dinner in a Tesco commercial?
Hmm.
Just get yourself banana, honey.

PS. There is more of that:

Britain’s Food and Mood Project recommends eating chicken, sardines, turkey, salmon, fresh tuna, nuts and seeds to boost serotonin levels. But Associate Professor Michael Baigent, clinical adviser to Beyondblue, said there was only low-level evidence to suggest tryptophans have a medical effect.

They are very careful not to say anything for sure, nevertheless, we sure can try, is it? So grab some food that will make you happy, next time you are shopping. And hmm, I can’t believe I am saying this, but looks like there is a happy life outside the chocolate wrapper.
